He studied at The Art Institute of Chicago, Rutgers University, and the Whitney Museum ISP. He was an artist-in-residence at Studio Museum in Harlem and attended Skowhegan. Clifford received the William H. Johnson Prize, Art Matters Grant, Louis Tiffany Comfort Award, NYFA Fellowship, NY Community Trust, Lambent Foundation, and Rutgers University Ralph Bunche Distinguished Graduate Fellowship.
