Courtesy the Artists (Malik Gaines & Alexandro Segade)
Courtesy the Artists is a collaboration between Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade. Courtesy the Artists is based in New York. Courtesy the Artists emerges from, runs parallel with, and departs from the performance work of the LA-based group My Barbarian. Courtesy the Artists invites artists and other cultural producers to interpret, react to, argue with, and take pleasure in historical works and texts that form dynamic foundations for present creative conditions. Courtesy the Artists produced its first project in the fall of 2012 as a program called The Meeting, which asked artists, musicians and dancers to respond to the agitprop songs of Black Panther Party leader Elaine Brown. Courtesy the Artists will produce its second project as Trad., a fall 2013 residency where ideas of folk music propose an authorless yet culturally-situated model of production. Courtesy the Artists emphasizes artists as agents of discourse and respects their contributions.
