Subodh Gupta

Subodh Gupta is an Indian artist born in 1964. He currently lives and works in New Delhi. Trained as a painter at Patna College of Art in the mid-1980s, he went on to experiment with a variety of other medias from sculpture and installation to photography, performance and video. Influenced by the legacy of Franco-American artist Marcel Duchamp’s ready-made, Gupta chooses everyday objects of the Indian subcontinent (such as steel tiffin boxes, thali pans, bicycles, and milk pails) and relocates them as art objects in monumental installations. Drawing on ordinary elements of Indian culture, Gupta’s work reflects on his homeland’s boiling economic growth and shift to a more materialistic mindset. Since the early 1990s, he has exhibited worldwide: Tramway (Glasgow, Scotland), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), The Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane, Australia), Pinchuk Art Centre (Kiev, Ukraine). His work is in many collections including François Pinault Collection.
