Hans Breder

Born in Germany in 1935. Classically trained as an artist in Hamburg. Arrived in NYC in 1964. George Rickey organized first exhibition in NY consisting of Constructivist aligned reflective sculptures showcased at the Richard Feigen Gallery in 1967.Wanting to do more ephemeral and performative work, Breder chose university life at an auspicious historical moment. Breder created the first "Intermedia and Video Art Program" at the University of Iowa in 1968 and directed it until 2000. This year, the Iowa program is included in the traveling exhibition Anti-Academy. Breder's Intermedia program is featured with a University program in Copenhagen and one in Tokyo as early revolutionary programs still in existence.Breder has worked in many genres but he is a pioneer in the media arts. His time based work has been included in several Whitney Biennials (1987, 1989, 1991). In 2013, he has enjoyed a major retrospective of his media work at Ostwal Museum, Dortmund, Germany. His most recent time based "liminal film" explorations are presently showing at White Box Art Center.
