Maria Hassabi

Maria Hassabi (b. 1973, Nicosia, Cyprus) is a New-York based director, choreographer and performance artist. After moving to the United States in 1990 to acquire her B.F.A. in Performance and Choreography at the California Institute of the Arts, she moved to New York in 1994 to study at the Merce Cunningham Studio. She was a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow and received The President’s Award for Performing Arts from the LMCC in 2012. Nationally, Hassabi has performed at venues such as The Kitchen, Danspace, MoMA PS1 (New York); Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (Orgeon); Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and was featured in Performa 09. Internationally, Hassabi has been presented at the Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva); Kaaitheater (Brussels); Beit Hair Center for Urban Culture (Tel Aviv); and at festivals such as Tanz im August (Berlin) Springdance Festival (Ultrecht); and ImPulsTanz (Vienna). Hassabi is currently represented Cyprus as part of the 55th Venice Biennale, (2013).
