Marking their 40th anniversary this year, Akademia Ruchu, (‘Academy of Movement’), is a group operating at the intersection between art and theater, which was founded in 1973 in Warsaw, Poland, where it brought together a group of performers with a wide range of academic and physical training – from ballet to martial arts. The group have consistently pursued the ‘politicization of aesthetics’, as a strategy to engage with a general public and have engaged in insightful reflections on communist and post-communist Poland, finding ways to communicate even when particular forms of speech and action are censored. Performa 13 is excited to present Chinese Lesson / Chińska Lekcja is an evening composed of a series of performances; short five to ten minute pieces involving five members of the group, originating out of thirty years of Akademia Ruchu's experience in building their own visual theatrical language.
Chinese Lesson / Chińska Lekcja is co-presented by Performa, the Polish Cultural Institute New York and The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at The Graduate Center, CUNY. Part of the Polish Pavilion Without Walls.
