Courtesy the Artists (Malik Gaines & Alexandro Segade) 24 Hour Ballad

(24 hrs) Fri Nov 15, 12pm to Sat Nov 16, 12pm

Recess MAP

24 Hour Ballad takes a narrative folk ballad and expands its potential through performances and actions that continuously develop its content throughout the period of a day and night.  A rotating group of invited artists and musicians will collaborate, using a shared-text as a starting point for exploration and improvisation.  This performance is a central event in Trad, Courtesy the Artists’ two-month Session at Recess in Soho.   The project is organized around the notion of “traditional” as an attribution in music. Trad. uses the idea of folk music as a publicly-accessible site that proposes an authorless yet culturally-situated model of production.  The “folk” is a symbolic scheme that articulates a past filled with emotional and political content.  While folk has been a dangerously segregating term, and its forms have been widely appropriated by avant-garde aesthetics, it’s a notion that may still offer insight into the place for art production within the common.

From Fri, Nov 15 at 12:00pm to Sat,  Nov 16 at 12:00pm (24 hrs)
