Katarzyna Krakowiak Opening Night of The Great and Secret Show / The Look Out Gallery

South Corner of James A. Farley Post Office, 421 8th Ave MAP

Join the artist for a special opening on Friday, November 8, from 6-8pm. Featuring tours of the installation by Katarzyna Krakowiak!

Katarzyna Krakowiak has created a sound-specific installation honoring the architecture and history of the James A Farley Post Office, a New York City landmark that has been part of the fabric of the city for generations, and one which will soon cease to exist in its current form. Situated opposite Pennsylvania Station – both buildings were designed one after the other by the firm McKim, Mead and White – the two buildings have always existed in relation to one another, with an underground tunnel connecting the two. Now, with volumes of paper mail radically reduced, the train station, which has become dilapidated and outdated, will redevelop and move into the Post Office site. Krakowiak, who has become known for her deceptively simple, yet epic, sonic installations which respond to architectural sites, has developed an composition using a knocks, which will be heard emanating from inside the walls. As well as tracing the different periods of renovation of the building with the different sounds made by knocking on a variety of building materials, the composition fills the once bustling, busy space with echoes of the letter-stamping sounds of the postal workers over the last century, as though history itself might be knocking on the walls.
