Paweł Althamer Ceremony in Honor of Queen Mother to Protect Mothers Against Eviction
- Tuesday, November 19, 6:30 pm
Biba, 110 Kent Ave, Brooklyn MAP
Artist Paweł Althamer in collaboration with Noah Fischer, Roman Stanczak, Szymon & Bruno Althamer, Rafal Zwirek and the Aaron Burr Society present a feast, a monumental sculpture, and a performative ceremony in honor of all mothers displaced from their homes. Set against Manhattan’s skyline on the Williamsburg waterfront, Biba of Williamsburg is the venue selected by artist Paweł Althamer for his Performa 13 commission. Williamsburg is an area that has seen rapid gentrification and a consequent displacement of people following an influx of money to the area. Queen Mother of Reality is a monumental sculpture to be built over the duration of Performa 13 on the waterfront outside Biba in Williamsburg, which will be completed by November 19. Queen Mother of Reality is a reclining woman looking across the water to Manhattan built from local steel and discarded scraps by the artists and other volunteers, and is a companion sculpture to the Statue of Liberty. The sculpture defines a new spirit of New York - rather than welcoming immigrants from overseas for a new life, the Queen Mother watches over displaced people, and offers shelter.
Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely: Community Mayor of Harlem and Goodwill Ambassador to Africa at the United Nations will be present at the dinner to accept a gift from the artists, and to bless the 50 foot long steel and mixed media sculpture Queen Mother of Reality which will be moved to a spot beside the East River. Szymon Althamer, master chef based in Warsaw, will design a unique performative feast followed by live music and dancing at Biba.
