The People’s United Nations or pUN is Pedro Reyes’s largest, most complex initiative for a New York City museum to date, and one of the first commissions for the Queens Museum’s newly expanded facility, opening Fall 2013. pUN is Reyes’s attempt to create a parallel, playful version of the United Nations, inspired by the fact that the global body's General Assembly met from 1946-50 in the building that later became the Queens Museum and the unparalleled internationalism of New York City.
pUN consists of two parts: an exhibition of sculptures and a two-day event. For the event, the 193 member countries of the UN will be represented by residents of New York who are immigrants from or who have family ties to those countries. Citizens rather than diplomats, these delegates will deploy alternate negotiation techniques drawn from radical theater, social psychology, and corporate management to address urgent global questions. Curated by Larissa Harris.
Tours every half hour from 12 - 5 pm. First-Come, first-served.
