Subodh Gupta Artist Class: FOOD AS PERFORMANCE: THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE INDIAN KITCHEN
- Wednesday, November 13, 1:00 pm
Subodh Gupta’s penchant for all things gastronomic leads him to consider the Indian kitchen as an important locus of performance. Several of the artist’s early works explore the theatrical dimensions of making, serving, and consuming food as performance rituals. The Spirit Eaters at Khoj and The Showroom dinner in London exemplify the ways food as well as a whole range of culinary traditions operate in Indian domestic and public spaces.
Gupta offers an experiential artist class in which he shares his ideas about the relationship of food and performance with special reference to the Indian kitchen, conjuring a space that throbs with vibrancy where everyday is a performance in itself and in it each person keeps the show alive, the fires lit, and the stomachs full. You do not simply watch, but touch, smell, and take into yourself every bit of what is served up.
