Rashid Johnson’s first live performance is a reimagining of Dutchman, an Obie Award winning theatrical play written in 1964 by LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), presented at the well-known Russian & Turkish Baths in the East Village. A political allegory that wanders into the surreal, the Performa 13 presentation is a journey through physical sensations and emotional atmospheres for actors and audiences alike as they collectively participate in the endurance-testing performance drama that shifts from the Bath’s heated rooms and other spaces. The Baths’ conditions disrupt the narrative flow of the play – a tense confrontation between a black man and a white woman on a subway train that continually teeters on violence – so that the drama unfolds in fits and starts. This approach incites a profound sense of disorientation, recalling off-centered and out of sync notions of time and space in relation to the body and lived experience as well as the ways in which past historical events and climates continue to show themselves in the present in particular locations and situations, arriving like a sudden change in the weather.
Dutchman is a Performa Commission curated by Adrienne Edwards.
Generously supported by Hauser & Wirth.
