Martha Graham Dance Company Surreal Graham: Herodiade and Spectre-1914

Martha Graham Studio Theater, 11th Floor, Westbeth, 55 Bethune Street, NY, NY 10014
$20 (includes a glass of wine)

Was Martha Graham a Surrealist? The Martha Graham Dance Company will present an intimate look at two seminal Graham masterworks created during the height of the Surrealist movement. Graham stars Miki Orihara and Katherine Crockett will dance the rarely-performed Herodiade (1944).  Originally titled The Mirror Before Me, this dance has an evocative set by Isamu Noguchi and music by Paul Hindemith.  Crockett will also perform the iconic solo Spectre-1914 from 1936 -- the same year MoMA presented “Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism." Archival footage of Graham herself in both dances will be shown. A top art historian as well as the Graham Artistic Director, Janet Eilber, will frame each dance with commentary on possible Surrealist connections.  The hour-long event in the Martha Graham Studio Theater at Westbeth is part of the GrahamDeconstructed series. The $20 ticket includes a glass of wine and Q&A with the artists.

Presented by the Martha Graham Dance Company.
